George Brown 1906 - 1937
The life of George Brown goes back to the closing years of the 19th century. The need to work, as well as the need to live, brought young Mary Lackey from the village of Ballyneale, County Kilkenny, to Manchester. Young Francis Brown, Mary Lackey’s boyfriend who had followed her to Manchester, came from the neighbouring village of Inistioge.

I am very proud of my son, and the only thing that is keeping me up is that he died for the cause of freedom and anti-Fascism, in which he believed till his last breath.
The thoughts of George Brown’s 67-year old mother,
Mary, succinctly identify the beliefs that motivated him.
